Tribute to a Dog

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

Neil's Blog #2

Neil, the Shetland Sheepdog, here again. It finally happened. I have been living with that wretched cat for 2 ½ years now and she swipes at me all the time. Just for the record, I don’t and never will understand cats. Yesterday we got a little too close face to face so she swiped at me. Usually she swipes at me as I am running away and nothing happens because I have such thick fur. She scratched my nose (the black leather part) and it was bleeding! I didn’t cry out (I am so strong), but my mother ran over to me to see if I was okay and then she saw the blood. Of course she freaked out and has been spoiling me even more than usual ever since. I don’t think there will be a noticeable scar. Thank goodness! It would have made me look like a rogue. A rogue dogue! Woof!
All for now!
Yours truly,

Neil

Dog Attack (Averted)

Neil and I were out walking yesterday. All was well. We were strolling along and then I heard a man yelling back behind us. I turned around and saw him across the street with two large black dogs, both on leashes. He must have accidently dropped one of the leashes and one of the dogs started running after us at full speed dragging his leash behind him! The dog paused for a moment (hearing his owner) and then kept after us. I froze! Was this dog friendly? Or would he attack my dog? Even from a distant I could see that the hair on his back was up and he didn’t look very friendly. I wasn’t going to take any chances. I quickly lifted Neil up as high as I could. The dog was right there beside me. He was very aggressive, trying to jump up and snapping. Fortunately, I am not afraid of dogs (good because they can smell fear). I said, “down, down, go home,” as forcefully and as confidently as I could, turning away from him. The dog finally turned and went home. Meanwhile the owner was still yelling for the dog to come, but the man never left his driveway. I kept walking while still holding Neil in my arms. My heart was pounding and my hands were shaking. Thank God Neil didn’t get hurt. I wasn’t even concerned about myself, only Neil. I can’t even imagine what could have happened if I hadn’t lifted him up. Maybe the other dog would have settled down and been fine. On the other hand, he could have bitten, or worse, even attacked Neil. I will never know, but I am glad I didn’t take that chance.

Neil's Paw

I was walking Neil this morning and we were about halfway around our route when he suddenly started to limp. He was favouring his front left paw. I checked his paw and I didn’t see anything. We continued to walk but he was still limping. I then changed our route to get home faster. (I would carry him if I had to.) I crossed the street and decided to check his paw again. I still didn’t find anything. I removed my woolen gloves. My sense of touch would be better without them. Sure enough, I felt in between his pads and I found a small pine needle. Problem solved!

Poor Baby Girl! She would like to go out and explore the outside world!

Packing Up Christmas

Yesterday, I packed up the Christmas tree and the decorations. I didn’t enjoy any nice peaceful days leading up to Christmas this year (it seems to come faster every year and I missed nine days when I was away in early December). So, I put on two of my all-time favourite Christmas CDs (on repeat), carefully packed up all the decorations, and sang my brains out to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s The Christmas Attic and Ally McBeal, A Very Ally Christmas featuring Vonda Shepard (boy, can that girl sing) and the show’s cast. The last song on The Christmas Attic CD, “Music Box Blues,” is a seldom-heard song but I love, love, love it. It makes me want to cry. Please listen to it some time. I had the cat sitting on a stack of storage boxes beside the couch and the dog had his head on my leg while I put the “special” ornaments in their respective boxes. It was a long process and I enjoyed every minute of it. The cat was not happy with me packing up her tree and putting all her “toys” away. She sat on ALL the boxes and basically got in the way. At the end, she was sitting on the tree skirt and I had to slide it, and her, out slowly until she finally got up.

She looks so sad here.

New this year from my daughter

I bought this one because of his hat and scarf!
